What Causes Sciatica During Pregnancy? 🧠⚡️
The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back down the back of each leg. When it becomes irritated or compressed, you may feel pain, tingling, numbness, or weakness—often on your right side or left side, or down your left leg or right leg. This is your typical sciatic nerve pain.
This pain can be described as shooting pain, dull pain, tightness or like tight muscles, general aches and pains, etc.
In pregnancy, women experience sciatic nerve symptoms due to:
Postural shifts as your center of gravity changes
Hormonal changes that affect joint stability
Muscle imbalances and tightness in the hips or glutes
Increased demand on your low back and pelvis
The growing uterus and less space overall inside of your core/pelvic region
Sitting for long periods of time, which can put pressure on the sciatic nerve
Expected weight gain secondary to pregnancy and as a side effect, there may be less space for not only the growing baby but also the internal organs.
